Dish Network Satellite TV Dish is the best in the Satellite TV Dish industry with advanced technology and perfect programming packages. Dish Network Satellite TV Dish makes your Television watching a pleasant movement. Dish Network Satellite TV Dish Digital Video Recorder (DVR) allows you to PAUSE / REWIND / REPLAY Live TV programs. DVR also enables you to record up to 100 hrs of your favorite shows without tapes. Dish Network Satellite TV Dish delivers you over 256 channels with digital quality.
Where do you live?

Apartment? Or a single-family/duplex home?
A clear line of sight from a dish antenna to the southern sky is necessary to receive a direct signal from the satellite. Nearly 98 % of all residences are able to have a dish antenna.

What is offered by cable in your area?

Is the cable provider in your neighborhood offering analog-only, true digital, or a hybrid analog/digital service? Satellite signals are considered to be the highest quality as they are first generation (directly from the Broadcaster to you). Digital Cable cannot be considered "Truly Digital" as it is generally a fourth or fifth generation signal relayed from sub-station to sub-station before reaching your residence. The relay of Digital Cable diminishes the overall quality of your picture and sound.

Winner-Satellite

What's offered in what programming packages?

Cable packages range from neighborhood to neighborhood, whereas satellite packages are the same across the nation. >"Digital cable" offers nearly as many total video and audio channels as satellite but at a slightly more expensive price per channel. Savvy viewers need to think ahead about what channels or types of programming they want to see, and chose packages accordingly.

Winner-Satellite

How much up-front can you spend?

Leasing vs. cash up-front vs. normal "free" offers are typically provided by the satellite providers. The cable operators typically offer a "lease" model whereby consumers pay a small percentage of their monthly bills to "lease" the set top box. These need to be investigated and compared.

Winner-Satellite and Cable

Want interactive-type features?

Not much interactivity is available at this stage from cable providers, except for electronic programming guides (EPGs) made to look like satellite guides. Satellite offers EPGs and a new line of services from DISH Network and DirecTV. DirecTV offers TiVo, for recording, but at an upfront cost of around $400 to buy the receiver. While, DISH Network today offers its 508 series set-top box, with free basic personal video recorder functionality at a cost of $49 at time of activation. This has also been supplemented by DISH Network's 721 series, allowing consumers to simultaneously record one program and watch another. These interactive TV services offer personal video recorders - which pause, record and rewind live broadcasts -- plus enhanced broadcasting are only offered on Satellite.

Winner-Satellite

Want an always-on 2-way Internet connection?

This is one area where the true advantage goes to cable. 2-way satellite offerings do exist, however, at soonest, satellite is still several years away from a price, speed and quality that readily competes with cable's. Yet, cable internet connections are only available in select areas, whereas Satellite connections can be established anywhere the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Winner-Cable (Close 2nd Satellite)

Want HDTV?

Cable still is facing problems delivering HDTV. Both DISH Network and DirecTV offer HDTV programming. DirecTV, with its single LNB (the receiving end on the Satellite Dish) will experience bandwidth problems as programming increasingly switches to HDTV. DISH Network has planned ahead and has launched innumerable programs to ensure unlimited bandwidth capabilities.

Winner-Satellite (DISH Network)

Want bundled packages?

Again, advantage cable. Some larger cable systems offer telephone, Internet and video services all bundled together. Satellite does not. And why would they want to? Satellite companies stick to what they do best-offer the best TV packages at the best prices.

Winner-Cable

How many TVs will be served?

Previously, Cable's almost nationwide "lease" model allowed the maximum number of set-top boxes to be served at the lowest cost-per-set compared to satellite operators. Nonetheless, satellite (DISH Network in particular) has recently catching up here, and new "additional box" plans of up to 4 receivers are being offered to the consumer at a better price than cable.

Dish network News Update May 20, 2005

DISH Network Again Leads the Pay-TV Industry in Customer Satisfaction Index; and Ranks Above All Cable Companies for Fifth Consecutive Year

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2005--EchoStar Communications Corporation's (NASDAQ: DISH) DISH Network(TM) satellite TV service finished first among all pay-TV providers in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for the second straight year.

DISH Network posted the highest score among all satellite and cable TV companies in the results of the index released today. DISH Network finished above all cable companies for the fifth consecutive year -- covering every year that the University of Michigan has assembled the index for pay-TV companies. DISH Network also ranks No. 1 in Customer Satisfaction among Cable/Satellite TV Subscribers by J.D. Power and Associates, giving DISH Network a clean sweep of the most prestigious customer satisfaction awards.

The ACSI surveyed consumers in 2005 for their opinions about quality, overall value and loyalty.

"Our No. 1 ranking in customer satisfaction by the ACSI demonstrates DISH Network's commitment to provide the best value in pay television, a commitment reflected in the company's phenomenal growth in recent years," said Michael Kelly, executive vice president of Customer Service for EchoStar. "We continue to work hard to deliver the highest-quality, all-digital programming, including broadcasting local channels in 158 markets and in all 50 states. We will constantly seek to unveil new technologies, while providing the lowest all-digital prices in the nation. In short, we intend to build upon our industry leadership and work to satisfy all our customers."

The ACSI is a national economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products and services available to the nation's consumers. The index is produced by the Stephen M. Ross Business School at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the international consulting firm, CFI Group.

UPDATED NEWS MAY 22, 2005: Satellite TV is making gains for several reasons. One is that satellite TV's customer service ratings have outpaced cable, although this is showing signs of change as cable providers roll out new products such as advanced digital video recorders and more high-definition channels, said Charles White, TNS Telecom's vice president. Another is higher rates that have increased at least 5 percent a year over the past five years in Western Pennsylvania.

"A lot of people have this vision of the cable company not being on time for appointments, and always raising rates," White said. The cable companies know this, he said, and have committed more strongly to customer service.

The TV competition will intensify in coming years as providers continue to move into each other's businesses and offer "bundled" TV, Internet and phone packages with discounts, and as technology moves further toward a seamless group of home services.

Consumers are beginning to recognize the importance of combined TV and other interactive services, said Steve Effros, a lawyer, consultant and cable trade publication columnist.

Satellite companies rolled out digital TV faster than cable providers, but cable has caught up and, unlike satellite, can sell a household TV, Internet and phone services. Phone companies will be able to do the same, although they're just building their networks, he said.

Appliances inside the home, meanwhile, seem to be blending together. Families years from now might use a kind of central media center served by a fiber-optic or other "pipeline" that, for example, would allow the computer to easily become a TV and then a stereo, too, White said.

Consumers are seeing the first signs of this now, with wireless phones that play video clips, for example, and the Microsoft Media Center edition of its Windows XP operating system for PCs that combines computer, TV and digital video recording.

For now, satellite providers are aggressively marketing TV service on their own and through big electronics retailers such as Best Buy. The companies won't disclose subscriber numbers by region, but DirecTV and Dish Network appear to be gaining ground in Western Pennsylvania.

Gary Pietropola said his Laketon TV business in Penn Hills installs 10 Dish Network and DirecTV systems a day, six days a week, "and we're booked through the end of May."

Dish Network sales rise when cable rates increase, said Dave Prosperino, owner of PAC Comm in Baldwin. "It used to be, people who got satellite were the ones with more money, but now it's a better deal," he said. Dish Network is the superior choice for customer service and rates!

"Five years ago, I had 460 customers. Today, I have 1,900, and since Jan. 3 of this year we've made 127 installations," said Dominick Pallone, owner of Houston Electronics in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County, who agreed high bills are hurting cable.

Making the switch to Dish Network Satellite TV

Stephen Williams, of Scottdale, Westmoreland County, said he switched to DirecTV 13 months ago because of problems with cable TV service from Armstrong Cable. He also thought prices were too high. Satellite TV is cheaper than CABLE!

Williams said he was tired of cable technicians giving an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. range for service. "Well I work, so what am I supposed to do?" Williams said. William Smouse, co-owner of Smouse Satellite TV in Smithton, "actually came out and installed the dish on a Sunday," Williams said.

Comcast Corp. is the nation's biggest cable provider, with 24 percent of the combined cable/satellite market. Locally, it's poised to move into bankrupt Adelphia Communications Corp.'s service areas under terms of a $17.6 billion deal that also calls for Time Warner Inc. to take over Adelphia assets in some other regions.

Comcast has about 620,000 subscribers in Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Adelphia has about 400,000 in Western Pennsylvania.

Dish Network said it added 325,000 subscribers nationwide in the first quarter, for a total of 11.23 million. Dish Network's parent company, EchoStar Communications Corp., ranked first in customer satisfaction in a J.D. Power and Associates survey last fall.

Jennifer Frick had trouble with Comcast reception at her Penn, Westmoreland County, home and switched to Dish Network about a week ago. "I'm looking at $13 a month in savings," plus an improved picture, she said.

Satellite plans include one receiver, serving one TV, with a $5-a-month fee for each additional unit, although installers say the growing use of dual receivers means a family with four TVs would pay only one $5 charge.

Wooing subscribers. Why are people are switching to Dish Network Satellite TV?? Because its the only choice that makes sense. Service and Rates are much better.

The number of cable subscribers in the city fluctuates between 85,000 and 95,000, based on franchise fees paid to the city, Peduto said. Verizon would need a franchise agreement for TV in the city, and it would have to submit plans to take its service citywide, not just to Beechview and Brookline where fiber-optic lines now are being installed, Peduto said.

Satellite customers generally pay a few dollars less a month than cable users with a comparable package.

Satellite fans say that tiers of channels are smaller than cable packages, and there are more specialty packages so customers are less likely to pay for stations they don't watch.

Dish Network Satellite TV is definetely the superior choice!

News: May 7, 2005 - EchoStar Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:DISH) reported that its DISH Network(TM) satellite television service added approximately 325,000 net new subscribers during the first quarter of 2005.

For the quarter ended March 31, 2005, EchoStar reported total revenue of $2.02 billion, a 28 percent increase compared with $1.58 billion for the corresponding period in 2004.

Basic earnings per share was $0.70 for the quarter ended March 31, 2005, compared with a basic loss per share of $0.09 during the corresponding period in 2004. Net loss for the quarter ended March 31, 2004, included a $78 million charge related to early redemption of certain debt securities during that quarter.

Detailed financial data and other information are available in EchoStar's Form 10-Q for the quarterly period ended March 31, 2005, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
